This is going to sound like I'm making it up, but I swear it happened. Around 2006 I was shown "American Movie" by some friends. I knew nothing about it, so the entire time I was watching it I assumed it was a "Spinal Tap" style mockumentary. It was hilarious, I kept thinking "man, the writing and acting are SO GOOD!" After it was over and I mentioned this, my future husband just stared at me and said "... uh, no, that was a documentary. That was real." My entire world imploded in an instant.
