Just finishing Cory Doctorow’s Enshitification book. He is at the section where he is identifying solutions. One of those he calls “Right to exit”. It occurred to me this is similar landscape which existed a few years back with Ontario’s cellular rules. Back then if you wanted to switch phone providers you had to change phone numbers. Rules changed where your phone # became your property and you could move it with you. We need to do the same thing with our social media IDs. You should be able to take your Facebook handle and seamlessly move to Mastodon for example. No one should be able to impersonate your handle (unlike what can happen with email). The Mastondon server could simply be set to allow only traffic from handles you explicitly follow. No more ads in your feed. This might have to be implemented as a handle translation service, but that would still work if your service handle was universal.
