Do/Have you used a CD/DVD/Bluray in a while? What about burning a disk? I'm surveying modern day awareness/usage of optical media, mostly to confirm some demographic theories, so if you know what a CD/DVD is, please help me (and maybe others) out by answering some ~10 questions here: https://optical-media-survey.benjojo.co.uk/ And then please boost for better visibility! Thank you!

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk from whom do I still get data CDs/DVDs? From old people (older than my 57). Who do you still give data DVDs/CDs to? My dentist I give CDs with pictures (to be displayed in his practice), because the cloud does not exist and USB sticks are dangerous.

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk I’ve listened to a cd on my car stereo within the last five years. Does my car count as a computer?

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk some radio buttons should be checkboxes really e.g. it's possible to have a computer with builtin cd/dvd drive *and* another computer with external cd/dvd drive had to pick one when I could have checked both

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk I've stopped having computers with any drive to read or write them so many years ago. I figure I've balanced enough with the amount of copies I did in my teenage years 😶‍🌫️ Good study 💪

  • @benjojo@benjojo.co.uk Never thought about it much, I've burned audio/video onto cds and dvds, but never on blu-ray. Always burned blu-ray for data only.

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk There should be a difference between the "I technically have an old laptop with a CD/DVD drive in a drawer somewhere and could take it out if need be" option and "the computer I'm using daily has a drive" option.

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk I want to, but every pack of writable optical media I've purchased and tried burning in the past decade has had like 75% or worse failure rate (unable to read it back). It's like everyone is selling old stock that rotted in hot warehouses decades ago or something...

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk So much cool optical media really isn't surpassed by "newer" things. I recently made someone some M-Discs of their data before they moved overseas... There's really not an alternative for long-term offline backup for consumers.

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk thanks for this survey, I'm curious about the results! I grew up with CDs and a huge DVD collection, but then I switched to Spotify and streaming... With changes such as Netflix locking accounts to one household (all our video streaming platforms were shared from friends or family) we started to go back to alternative means of getting our movies and tv shows And last January we decided to drop Spotify, which was a huge change when you've used it exclusively for the past 10-15 years... I had to buy an external CD reader, find a good ripper and tagger for Linux, and we started to digitalize our collection. We've also been enjoying our library's huge CD collection!

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk I still use blueray and M-disc (not many blanks left, sadly) for burn and forget it backups. I don't really want to be babysitting a NAS or RAID at home. And I'm not a big fan of "the cloud". Yes I'm old lol Also the radio in my car plays MP3 CD's so burn a bunch of CD's or a podcast to a cheap CDR and use that as disposable storage. I also have more DVD movies then I can watch in a lifetime from friends giving away their collections or stuff I got at flea markets. 💿
