There will be plenty more wee beasties from Löwenstein coming, but for now, here's something new from @mpi_astro on the Königstuhl today.
It's another sawfly called Tenthredopsis sordida, but which lacks an informal name in both English and German, despite being relatively common in Europe.
Pity – it's a pretty one 🤷♂️

@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social @mpi_astro@wisskomm.social Sounds like an opportunity for creating a name for Tenthredopsis sp. in general. Snake fly is taken. Hornet fly? For its abdominal colors. Wasp fly? For its colors. Regal fly? For its thoracic detail and crown-like structure on the head. Stacked fly? For its black markings on its abdominal tergites. I keep using "fly" since it's a sawfly (a kind of primitive wasp, sort of), but the common name could be anything.
