@scarlet@plush.city gonna disagree
(As one of the commercial webhosts, I'm biased, BUT)
There's a lot of demand on creative types these days, and indies need more skills than ever to be successful.
We need more small providers and trusted friends. Not everyone needs to individually self host, but everyone needs to know someone.
Specialization is the superpower of civilization. We should be leaning on that.

@astraluma@tacobelllabs.net Does self-hosting not include being able to host for small groups? Does it not involve commercial web hosts? Most folks won't be running a server in their closer, for example. I know I don't. As an example, a self-hosted forum necessarily has other users on it. A self-hosted minecraft server could serve many people. I see supporting self-hosting as a broad anti-centralization front. I'm actually in support of reasonable hosting companies.

@astraluma@tacobelllabs.net @scarlet@plush.city I agree, we need smalls pods of groups of self hosting peoples. Self hosting is a full time job :/ Not everyone is willing to do it, nor have time for.
