@deepmud@mas.to they may be 'laden' in some cases by fouling organisms like sponges, algae, bryozoans, etc! it can provide a nice source of camouflage to the scallop, though might be a burden when swimming! https://shellmuseum.org/blog/spongy-rough-scallops/
