@jonmsterling@mathstodon.xyz but choosing not to give a remote talk was always possible! I, too, might opt not to give such a talk. But would you give your first year PhD student the advice to decline the opportunity to give a remote talk?

@yforster@types.pl Probably not, but I certainly would let them make the choice. I think there's a potential career benefit from being physically at the conference, but I am not so sure there is much of a difference career-wise between giving a remote talk (that people will mainly remember with distaste because of the A/V issues), and just having a great PLDI paper on your CV.
