@feld@friedcheese.us @shanselman@hachyderm.io thanks! So he wrote some stuff here and there for Zip2, but it was mostly pretty bad and seems to have been completely replaced before the sale to Compaq. I didn’t know this and I’m always glad to round out my knowledge
The top claim was he wrote stuff that became part of PayPal, though, and I don’t think any of the Zip2 stuff did that? AFAIK, Musk was not a technical contributor to the “X.com” that PayPal bought.

@calcifer@hackers.town @shanselman@hachyderm.io I don't think there's any way for us to verify if any Elon code from Zip2 actually landed in production somewhere at early Paypal. But he did write code. He got paid for it. It probably wasn't very good like most things that were gobbled up during the dotcom bubble. If we're going to critique his "expertise" we should be accurate or it gives people an opportunity to dismiss everything stated. So he does have experience, but there's no way for us to really judge how good he was at it. Based on the available evidence he was probably very average.
