My cynical take on the USA and excessive amounts of incarceration: It is a problem left over by the loop hole left in the 13th Amendment which continues to sanction slavery, for those: "except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted." If it takes another Civil War, to close that loop hole? IMHO, the USA will be better for it in the long run; even if more bloodshed occurs. That is: if such a war can be won by those who would close the loop hole. In the meantime, there are unhealthy incentives to put more laws on the books to create more incarcerated individuals for their "cheap" labor; and it more or less undermines many legitimate professions for those who are "free" because the cheapskates can just use prison slaves instead. Congress, in theory, could side step the whole war thing and amend the Constitution. They don't seem to feature rectifying the errors remaining in the 13th Amendment as a priority. Anyway, I am an abolitionist. I do not just want to abolish slavery, I want to abolish prisons. In the USA, those remain synonymous systems of domination and control. I also hate the FreeBSD jails subsystem for its shitty name choice (and its creator, seems to have an unhealthy obsession with rule of law, which is coming from a position of privilege, because that developer does not reside in the USA with all of its oppression in its so-called "justice" system).
