Consistency helps users do their work. But foolish consistency (insert quote here).
And what looks consistent to the programmer may be meaningless to the user. ("Ah, all our quests and dialogue trees are DAGs! We should present them all the same!" No, nor should you show them as DAGs...necessarily.)

@afeinman@wandering.shop @jk@mastodon.social oh yeah I mean worse-is-better just presents it as one of a series of tradeoffs, and says that it has to be discarded if it would result in software being more complex. and indeed in the very example of reverse seeking being impossible in some particularly obscure codecs, the approach of just greying the back seek button out perfectly satisfies it
