Moving sshd away from :22 is one of the first things I do with a new VPS. Then the random login attempts fall away to almost nothing.
Then I look at the logs real quick, and ignore the port 22 stuff if it's all noise.
Where a host is in the cloud matters too: IP space with high turnover (like Digital Ocean) is going to be a lot more noisy than a smaller hosting service where you might have to wait for manual approval.
