While they use the member card to make sure you come back. It can also benefit you if you use it intelligently. But you lose that if you don't have a membership card.
If they clearly stated that they tracked everything I bought and when I bought it in a nice human readable format that's easy to spot and parse. I'd have no real complaints.

I think they can store whatever they want if people are happy to agree and know what it's used for. I think you should see a screen similar to what android permissions looked like every time you sign up for anything. That's the easiest way to make sure users know how dumb they are without having to teach them how tech works every time.
