So we don't like membership cards, but it's ok, since we can always refuse to use them. What is evil is when the tracking is not opt-in. Right?

While they use the member card to make sure you come back. It can also benefit you if you use it intelligently. But you lose that if you don't have a membership card. If they clearly stated that they tracked everything I bought and when I bought it in a nice human readable format that's easy to spot and parse. I'd have no real complaints.
