Tbh, this kind of insidious, arrogant imposition does not come out of the blue unannounced.
This has been decades in the making, with google literally taking ownership of all that makes the web the web, bit by bit, deceptively; exploiting its early image as a benefactor, taking advantage of the utter absence of funding in FOSS, of the closeted and clerical nature of committees, all in the name of "profit". They literally became the web.
We collectively welcomed them, in spite of many warnings.
I'd boast "We told you so" to anyone within hearing range, but I doubt any of the concerned parties would ever have the self-awareness to feel anything but egocentric concern. 🤷♂️
