So because putting food waste into a landfill causes methane leaks and worsens global warming California mandated the use of a compost bin and now compost gets picked up separately from trash.
Of course plenty of people are morons and don't bother reading the signs and so put non-compost into the compost bin.
Given the upcoming fertilizer shortages, I wonder if the commercial compost programs are generating sufficiently unpolluted compost that it can actually be used to fertilize crops.

@alienghic@timeloop.cafe There is a company called "Re:Food" in Germany that does similar things on a larger scale. Not end-users, but leftover stock at groceries and supermarkets. At one point they changed their rules so that all collected items must be unpackaged. Long story short: Noone noticed, noone checked, and they ended up dumping shredded plastic everywhere.
