@clarko@mastodon.social – I've been conscious to distinguish between those two terms. But I'd use "social networking" to indicate the presence of a network, and "social media" to indicate that media is largely what is social (lots of sharing pictures, videos, et cetera). (According to that, social networking includes hanging out with anyone, as well as all of social media; so neither term refers to the more benevolent activities alluded to here. But I think it is appropriate usage.)

    @Starfia@mastodon.social and social media can be social networking, if you’re only generating or sharing media with your actual social circle. Social networking companies usually turn into social media companies in the long run, because small-scale networking doesn’t drive enough engagement for shareholders.
