last Thursday, i had the opportunity to take an amazing maskmaking and ancestry workshop with Kyra Royo Fay, where we worked with Scotch broom, gorse, and wheatpaste while reflecting on 'invasiveness' and ancestry. a lot of grief came out for me, rooted in my latter stewardship years, where my relationship to 'invasive' plants became increasingly complex. this was the first time i truly felt comfortable sharing about these feelings, and was in good company. as we settled in to the space (Nova Arts Hub), there were sprigs of broom on the tables and we noticed lots of cute, tiny insects wandering around the table, displaced from their cozy homes. so i decided to make a mask inspired by them. i brought one of my muses home as well, and have since learned that they are broom psyllid nymphs that apparently feed exclusively on broom. i wish i had rescued more. (i may add some features in the future to represent them more accurately, since i couldn't see them up close at the time.) 🪲 i kept thinking of @ephemeral 's work with aiteann throughout the gathering, and look forward to more reflections/work in this vein. i may also collaborate with Kyra in the future. #theWorkshop
