This article by George Monbiot on ‘radical listening’ as a method for turning people away from the far right is interesting to me because in some ways it offers a cosy-language version of Gramsci’s recommendations for building support for the left; but it also, to me, doesn’t quite recognise the reflexive dynamism of what ‘radical listening’ could entail if we follow Gramsci’s thinking through. What does Monbiot say? Monbiot describes a canvassing technique where canvassers listen to and connect with people by discussing their feelings without judgement, seeking common ground by asking questions and sharing their own experiences. He argues that people who feel listened to listen back, and people who don’t feel judged are more open-minded. By effectively listening and engaging with people, canvassers build shared identities and are able to change people’s minds. /2

@RuthSalter@mastodon.scot Nice article. Why do I not need Gramsci , Monbiot or any other alpha male to know this? Anyway, it never hurts to be reminded. And it also doesn't hurt if those alpha male heavy powerstructures called "political parties" discover some simple truths, normal people namely women have always been aware of.

@RuthSalter@mastodon.scot Over the autumn winter I went out knocking on doors of my neighbours with a petition to tax the super rich. But, as we all know petitions have little chance, a big part was encouraging people to talk about the world in as open and friendly a way as I could with the bandwidth talking in person allows over text-based docisl media. I let people talk as long as they wanted. Some talked for several hours. There's a lot of isolation.
