Time base correction somewhat reduces how bad these switches look. Here's what it looks like watching the tape directly.

@themaritimegirl I have a few old recordings (all 1980 or older) that do this when switching between the program and the commercials, or between national/network content and local commercials. You can actually hear the head drum in the VCR momentarily lose servo lock.
