The latest software update for my decade-old Fujitsu ScanSnap ix500 scanner weighs in at ONE POINT ONE GIGABYTES. 🤯 Want a fresh install? Ricoh’s website offers up a DMG, the size of which is listed as, and I quote, “1,129,105,452 Bytes.” Massive! And also, bizarrely precise?! https://www.pfu.ricoh.com/global/scanners/scansnap/dl/setup/m-sshoffline-3_6_1.html?MODEL=5018 (cc @atpfm @caseyliss @siracusa @marcoarment, per recent discussions of efficient, responsible development practices)

542MB of the “ScanSnap Home.app“ bundle is an app called “PfuSsFirmwareUpdate.app,” 460MB of which is a binary file called “iX2500_0V00.bin” Considering my scanner is an ix500, I'm thinking nearly 50% of this massive app package is firmware for a scanner *I don't even own.* Sigh.

@gruber@mastodon.social I feel like the ScanSnap Mac app weighing 1.1GB is classic @daringfireball@mastodon.social fodder.
