Seems I’m in error when tooting that #GasExport contract have ‘fixed prices’. They are way more complicated than that from what I am reading. Nonetheless, they do exempt govt tax regime changes in some form or other (I haven’t gone deeply enough — nor do I intend to — into the complex details of contractual clauses to clarify this). None of the above changes what matters most one iota. Australia gets bugger all benefit from gas export, the environment is heavily compromised and nothing the #GasExportingIndustry will ever do can compensate for or rehabilitate this. It’s up to our collective Govt(s) to redress these wrongs. Nor does it change the fact that #Japan not only slaps an #importTax (derives sovereign income from…) on the gas it ships in from Australia, but it #OnSellsGas at a profit as well. And THAT is where Australian benefits go to. I mean, I like Japan as much as the next person, but this is liking a robber for robbing you. If that wasn’t enough of a bloody nose, we have a #PM who, allegedly, gave his word that Australia would not try to profit from its own Gas resources while everyone else from production to shipping is raking it in by the heavy bucket load. @RaymondPierreL3@aus.social if my memory is correct Labor campaigned on the idea of taxing gas exports while trying to get elected in 2022.

@RaymondPierreL3@aus.social Norway taxes fossil fuel exports at 75%. They have the world's largest sovereign wealth fund. The Australia Institute, Konrad Benjamin, and David Pocock have repeatedly pointed to Norway as a solution Australia should adopt. @RaymondPierreL3@aus.social As I understand it Qatari citizens pay ZERO personal tax because they tax their gas exports spprpriatkey. Imagine that. ZERO personal tax in Australia for citizens and all we'd have to do is tax our gas the same as Qatar. I would think that any political party that ran on such a promise would easily win the next election #auspol #TaxTheRich #AustralianGreens #TheGreens
