I read about this in a paper mentioned in some material we got in a introductory psychology course. And I noticed this effect way before that with myself when I did IT work for the marketing people. The marketing people were sure that two different shades of a colour were clearly and "obviously like night and day" different. Where as for me I couldn't even tell them apart.
But then they told me their names and I had to research some issue they had in their software with them and well

@shivers after I spent quite some time on looking at them and trying to see the difference at some point I actually started to see them just as different and I even didn't really understand why I didn't notice how much they in fact did NOT look the same.
