I was doing a live set with a synth, pedals and laptop and a guy came up with it a beer in hand and shouted “can you play something different? Something uplifting or good?”
I was a bit spicier back then - and more annoyed he’d assumed I was DJ-ing - so I made everything even weirder. It was one of those hippie gigs in a barn where people were so wired anyone could play pretty much anything / any sound, and they’d still do the exact same wild, spiritual dance - disturbing how unrelated to the beat it seemed. Thus the judgement was not entirely unanimous like some other occasions. (Except there was no judgement at all, or sanity, beyond this man and a few unimpressed others like him.)
