The underlying economic problem is very similar: the more premium your experience becomes, the less accessible it is to the mass market. And for many executives, movies becoming a niche and premium experience instead of a cheap weekend entertainment is far more dangerous.

@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place sounds like a great plan in an age with high inflation, shrinking purchasing power, people being sick of being nickle'd and dime'd and tons of alternative entertainment forms available! /s

@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place The movie industry is in way worse shape than the games industry unfortunately :(. The only movies that reliably make money these days are kids films and horror movies. Lots of talk of repurposing screens to show quality TV/streaming series instead.
