#ArtThisHouse is always a fan of making a space your own, so today let's talk about the "Merzbau" by Dada trash artist Kurt Schwitters. "Merz" is another word for "dada" and "bau" is "construction." Makes sense. In 1923, Schwitters began reconfiguring his family home in odd angles and found objects. This view, photographed by William Reddeman, shows the Merzbau in 1927.

It certainly owes a lot to German Expressionism, Marcel Duchamp, and Russian Constructivism. It is far from cozy, but reflects the Dada response to a world that made no sense, that could bring about the mass, mechanized death of the First World War. Dada would reject all that and draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa. And it would redecorate. 2/?
