Yeah, it's like that old meme:
Step 1: Spend millions creating an amazing platform
Step 2: Make it free
Step 3: Invite the world in
Step 4: ???
Step 5: PROFIT!!!
But we learned much, much later that step 4 was endless enshittification and digital #slavery.

@rl_dane @freediverx the endless enshittification isn't a *requirement* though. It only happens because of venture capital and its demands for endless growth. It's perfectly possible to build a platform that is free, user-respecting, *and* profitable. VKontakte was a good example of that before Pavel was ousted and it got acquired by Mail.Ru Group and taken over by MBA people. It's been speedrunning enshittification over the last few years especially.
