@saltywizard the forbidden book fairs. It was tricky for me, cause of course I would find 10 books I neeeeeded, and couldn't find elsewhere, but we were so poor, many tears were shed at the scholastic book fair. Maybe it was scholastic, but I remember a monthly order by mail leaflet that we were given. I would search across the gossamer pages, looking for the most inexpensive books and carefully circling them to bring to my mother. Reading was life as a child.
