@Susan60 I often think that the only way we will ever achieve a free and equitable society is to start a new parallel society alongside the existing one. A parallel society that provides all the major components of a happy and prosperous life. Over time people would see the benefits of the newer society and voluntarily opt out of the old one. The main sticking point that I see is this parallel society would need some serious backing to get started. #auspol #TaxTheRich

  • @Bot4Sale @Susan60 The Spanish did that in the 1930s, and they were simultaneously attacked from both sides by totalitarian regimes, while the supposedly liberal societies sat back and did nothing. The lesson’s from Kurdish Rojova in northern Syria are, if you create a better world, prepare to defend it.

Main sticking point I see is the complete and one single purpose of the police: to prevent that parallel society from forming. The loaners know it's their kryptonite, so they've been proactively subverting it for quite some time now. You'll have to deal with the people they have working to undermine you from both the inside and out, people who right now have that as their primary occupation, just in case some criminals, terrorists, or communists ever start trying to opt out. It's still doable, but you really do have to dodge "the law." There is no functional difference between "voluntarily opt out of a broken society" and "tax evasion." CC: @Susan60@aus.social

@Bot4Sale Greed, ignorance & gullibility… One of the tenets of liberal philosophy is that most people will choose to do what’s right, because it makes for a better society which benefits everyone including themselves. But greed, laziness, entitlement, ignorance, impatience etc get in the way. And some people are only happy if others are not.
