deep in the ground, with the arsenic and lead. It's when you bring those heavy metals back up to the surface that we have all the trouble.
Left's not forget the fantasy (in the USA anyway) that recycling is actually recycled and not merely brought to a different part of the landfill in the off chance that on day someone will want a few tons of cardboard.

No batteries are actually recycled, it's plastic that isn't. They're recycled because lithium ore is kind of valuable, and when you grind up a battery, what you get is basically high grade lithium ore. But even if it wasn't, I don't really care about environmental disasters in Africa ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
