I like to think about sense as a semi-physical property, similar to negentropy. It can only be produced artificially by humans, and always requires conscious effort, and possibly also skill and experience. Without human attention, an automated system will at best retain sense, and more likely, lose it gradually. Every human intervention in the system is an opportunity, but not a guarantee, to increase it. When you remove an opportunity for human intervention from a process, you risk nonsense.
