Keeping in touch with people still employed as software engineers and I am so thankful to have left that all behind. Being a quant developer is so much more rewarding, not just in terms of compensation, but also in terms of being able to work on the right things to make real progress on what I am working on.
Having been a software engineer at a high level previously I also know how to avoid dumb mistakes as a quant.

Being much closer to where the money is being made and being able to quantitatively measure almost everything is super refreshing from an internal motivation perspective. I always had issues with product feature requests that had no success criteria attached. "Sales promised this to ${BIG_CUSTOMER}." I just don't care to be doing busy work.
