I’ve noticed this “grass mowing along the edges” in recent weeks and I approve of not mowing patches of grassland (or just mowing it once a year). Recently, in a cemetery, I saw a sign explaining it as deescalation measure: to mow the edges is to signify that the rest was not mowed on purpose. Otherwise, people will complain about the dilapidated state of things, wanting to see some imposition of order on the urban landscape. But apparently mowing the edges is good enough. Works for me. 🤷🏻 This thought brought to you after listening to an episode of Thinking Allowed on failed gentrification in Detroit where some people not only mowed their lawn but neighbouring plots as well, to mark the depopulated space as urban, cared-about space.
