This is the fifth forum post I am reading somewhere about Italo wanting to start long distance services in Germany and everyone being psyched about it. I for one think this is bad.
As a solely for profit operator, they will only operate the high yield routes. Those are already overcrowded – not necessarily the lines themselves but definitely the hub areas. Which will likely mean - because, yay! competition! – either DB Fernverkehr or local services will loose slots.
And second, DB Fernverkehr is already operating on thin margins. If they loose the better yields from those main lines, they may be forced to cut trains with lower demand. Which will likely mean cutting back the extent of some routes but also dropping early morning and late evening services.

@partim@social.tchncs.de I wish governments would understand that public transportation is infrastructure. It isn't meant to pay for itself directly. They don't charge for every trip on the Autobahn. Private companies are only 'competing' in the sense that you've put out a Monopoly board - ie. the legislative framework - and now they're playing your game. It isn't real competition.
