@partim@social.tchncs.de I wish governments would understand that public transportation is infrastructure. It isn't meant to pay for itself directly. They don't charge for every trip on the Autobahn. Private companies are only 'competing' in the sense that you've put out a Monopoly board - ie. the legislative framework - and now they're playing your game. It isn't real competition.

@mspcommentary@mastodon.online Depends. Italo in particular was extremely important in improving the Italian railways. Before their arrival, Trenitalia was both arrogant and often incompetent. Which is to say, where the state operator does a good job, there is no need for competition. But if they are a maliciously blockading all improvements, competition is pretty much the only option, given that they will have the government’s ear.
