oh hoooo
so apparently if you do something fancy when writing a tarball to tape, like, say, piping the tarball into some command like mbuffer or pv before it goes to tape, you may have to use that program during extraction as it might do things with the buffer size?
Anyway, well, can't test that on my photographs since I've already started backing it up to tape without using pv over ssh, but I am using zstd compression (instead of gzip) and it's now a local-to-the-machine backup.
I have another tape that I had backed up in the same way, so I should be able to test if untarring with pv works on that one. Anyway, this is why we do test runs, including reading... especially reading.

look, did I apply labels to these tapes with the label maker, of course I did. And did I eschew normal "black on white" labels for a subdued, mellow gold on black? of course I did. should I find better borders and such, probably, yeah. Also. Brother. WHY. Does your label maker spit out such long ass padding?! That label came out three times the size it needed to be...
