i'm just graduating college, i did an interview today for a (presumably entry level) remote full time hardware engineering role at a fairly small startup (10 or so people). at the end of the interview, i was asked how much in compensation i was looking for and i wasn't really sure how to answer, so the interviewer (who is the VP of hardware) said that if they decide to hire me the company could send an offer and i could counteroffer/negotiate from there if it doesn't match up with what I'm looking for.
so my question is - how much should i be expecting to make at this type of position?

@b the goal here is to get them to be the first one to name a number. we had a script for this once that contained the phrase "i will accept any reasonable offer" and escalated to something like "you're much better placed to tell me what we're worth to you than we are"

@b usually I will start searching for “title” + “location” to get a little bit of an idea. There’s levels.fyi , Glassdoor, and if your location has a site for builtin[xyz].com that might have a little bit of insight for you. Don’t forget to look at the whole package too, health insurance/benefits/options etc are also sometimes something you can negotiate.
