I transitioned at 37. I was not granted privilege up to that point. It was awful, even at the best of times. I say this as optimistically as possible: I will likely never repair all the damage that was caused by that. Performing the necessary therapeutic tasks in order to become who I should have always been able to be is sometimes unbearably painful. I find myself stopping things before I can even start at times.
I've made really good progress in 2 years, but it's not enough. It can't be. I transitioned at 37, but I won't be "done" until I'm 43. My maternal grandparents lived into their 80s, outliving my paternal grandparents by decades. If I die at 86, I will have been able to live as myself for only the last half of my life, which we all know to be the best half, yes? 😮💨
