@tnt @trcwm aaah OK. Yeah, that seems to be a hard problem.
But your components have one fixed, a priori, position?
Can you constrain the number of externally affectable inputs, the maximum inter-component fanout and the number of externally observable outputs? (Can one even talk of in- and outputs, or would "this circuit emulates a resistor, so this input is actually an output" be valid?)

@tnt @trcwm my thought process here is the following. For a start, assume there's 1 input (or one output, if you flip all the following) only. put that mentally in the center of a set of concentric rings (graph-wise, not as layout/graph embedding): Inner ring consists of nodes, each one a component of type A, next circle is all components of type B, and so on. You now add three layers (uff, but, bear with me) of directed traces on top: radially outward, radially inward, and circular.
