Language is important, and I think ‘externalities’ allows us to brush too much under the rug.
What it really ends up being is “government spending” either in extra healthcare funding, extra road works, wildfire management costs etc.
I suggest switching the term to government spending when discussing these ‘investments’. E.g. Building a pipeline to BC will require increased government spending in wildfire management. E.g. this pipeline supposedly will cost $4B to install (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/enbridge-sunrise-lng-pipeline-what-to-know-9.7176629) But to keep it operational, how much is our wildfire management bill going to increase? (this is an annual fee). There are many factors than just dollar values. But we need to compare true dollar costs to show them that the maths doesn’t even work out. #BC #Canada (2/2)
