@LJ Were they large wood ticks? If so, they don't cause Lyme, just the teeny, tiny black-legged (aka deer) ticks, spread by the white-footed mouse. The adults are no bigger than a sesame seed & the nymphal ticks about the size of a poppy seed. Wood ticks, of course, carry other diseases. Precautions for deer ticks is the same as for wood ticks, except they're harder to spot once on you. The "bullseye" rash from a deer tick bite won't necessarily appear. Yes, I've been a victim of Lyme. No fun.
