@MatthewNewell haha, thanks for fixing me up on the team mistake.
It still makes no sense.
I mean if he is feeling bad he could get off. road racing is the one sport where there is no glory in slogging out the back, and if he feels good well send back 2 riders to pull him.

@kat one of the coverages of a long clsssic a while back (like today) when they had a current sports director he was asked in a lull why comprehensively dropped rider would carry on. I think it was Matt White who explained that; at this time of year the top riders training/racing time is so tightly scheduled that missing a 250km ride will have ramifications into the future - IE there is no spare day before the Giro to fit in an unplanned really big day without massive reorganization.
