The cat, Captain, reminds me of another cat. I watched a kitten flee an unhappy home situation and he reappeared next year as my mother was taking laundry down from the clothesline, hissing as she reached to take the basket of warm dry clothes, suddenly in use as a feral cat bed with hissing cross-sighted cat defending his new safe place. We couldn't get close without either risk of injury or seeing him run into hiding; but my mother left out food and water and after months he let her pet him. Precious eventually became a house cat and nobody ever again tried to dress him up in doll's clothes for the rest of his life. If Captain is fleeing a toddler-tyrant from his rightful home then maybe he could find a safe-place to retire guarding your outdoors and work-desk-place? Give him a water dish and litter box and daily access to leave. I think he wants a retirement home.
