the entire business model of these companies is "I was the first to come up with some math to make video files smaller, pay me! even if you make a new different thing, I will scrape the bottom of my patent drawers to find something that claims your new thing still uses my math in some way and you owe me money, no person shall watch a video without paying me!"

@sirlan patent trolls are a blight but also a pretty logical symptom of 1. the capitalist system that encourages chasing profit with no consideration for the common good 2. the patent system built out on top of it to paywall ideas ugh
