One of the weird bits of the beekeeper class I took was the group of older white women there who really zero’d in on bee genetics and subspecies when it came up. Their annoyance at learning that sorry, bees mate freely and that keeping their sub-variety pure in this area was nigh impossible without artificial insemination was almost palpable.

  • Getting really concerned about controlling genetics in pets and livestock has always felt a bit weird and icky to me. Maybe because I try not to engage in human exceptionalism.
