@jago@mementomori.social I've done similarly dodgy stuff in the past, however I do not enjoy the anxiety of losing a $60 wood auger deeeeep down inside a big chunk of timber.
I think I might have to compromise on chasing a groove on a less-visible side of the post to bury a PVC conduit beneath the surface.

@tj@howse.social yeah, augers are bit scary in deep holes. I'd probably try a spade bit for most of the way and just finish with a twist drill (or auger 🤔️).
