(it would also be an excuse to do something fun, make a game for old hardware or do some embedded project on a very-low-power-by-modern-standards device.
But, mainly, as a filter to break the "memory is infinite and processor time is free" sort of attitude.)

[This is not a very serious proposal. The actual thing I think schools should do is make CS part of the math department again and make all the programmers-to-be actually learn how to math.]
