Meanwhile, drivers who kill cyclists can continue to expect nothing worse than a jolly good ticking off by the judge and maybe a few points on their licence. #biketooter https://www.theguardian.com/news/2025/apr/24/death-by-dangerous-cycling-crime-policing-bill?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

@Steveb@mastodon.ie we could insert the word "Both" at the beginning of the headline "Cyclists who kill pedestrians could be jailed for life [...]" without materially changing its meaning

@Steveb@mastodon.ie Barking. The perpetrators are most often teens. The most vulnerable, the elderly. We will be committing teens to life imprisonment for the negligent and accidental 'killing' of (in the main) elderly pedestrians. Shitty performative crowd-pleasing legislation aimed at a few positive headlines from the car-lobby oligarch-owned press (that is, virtually all of it). Same mistake as made by our forebears, applying draconian penalties in the hope it will deter 'bad stuff'. Very poor #Labour

@Steveb@mastodon.ie it's not an either/or situation - we need to deal with the arrogance of many people who use the roads.

@Steveb@mastodon.ie I saw a Tesla the other day with three stickers beside the wheel arch each depicting a cyclist with a cross through it, just as fighter pilots record their kills on the fuselage

@Steveb@mastodon.ie and what about drivers who kill pedestrians? They very rarely get a jail sentence

@Steveb@mastodon.ie I'm surprised that they had to enact a law at all. Manslaughter is manslaughter, whether you use a car or Silly String. And yes, I wish the husband had put his energy into stopping /all/ road deaths.

@Steveb@mastodon.ie Just what I was thinking when I saw that story. Even when driving whilst high on drugs, without a license or insurance and speeding, they usually get nothing more than a stern talking-to and - if they're really unlucky - a bit of community service.
