@repeatro See, I wasn't keen on the pre-rendered aesthetics of Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct and such and I absolutely bought Yoshi's Island pretty much as soon as it was released and I loved it. It was full of neat graphical tricks that also added to the gameplay. And showed the SNES could still hold it's own against the PlayStation and Saturn for the time being. And it's aged very nicely too. :)

@Carnivius I was used to play Game Boy games at this time and I never got my hands on an SNES as a kid, but I remember seeing screenshots of the game in the official Nintendo magazine, imagining how marvelous it must be to play this game. https://mastodon.social/@repeatro/112451700734846244

  • @Carnivius @repeatro Yeah, I got my SNES bundled with Donkey Kong Country, but that ended up being the only game of its kind (pre-rendered 3D assets) I got for the console. Aside from Flashback with its rotoscoped sprites, the rest of my SNES games had traditionally drawn 2D art, and I think they've mostly aged better than the DKC trilogy.

  • @Carnivius @repeatro IMO the game industry has been woefully negligent to make artful use of the hardware at their disposal. Okami should not be an outlier. There is so much space for visual creativity that just doesn’t get utilized at all.
