Some final notes:
I settled on spherical tops because one that I made with an elongated rectangular top shattered when I dropped it. I don't know if there's a way to mitigate this. Try it and see!
Also, at first I tied cords to the top with a loop for my wrist but this turned out not to be that useful so I don't do it any more.
And at first I put 1/2 inch oak dowels inside the canes because I was worried about them buckling under load, but at some point I stopped because of cost and have had no problems at all.
That's the whole story! I hope some folks find this interesting and/or useful...

One more thing I forgot to say. Depending on the price of copper these cost about $12-$15 to make. I've given away about 20 over the last few years by just leaving them at a local free-clothes station that someone put up. I've never seen anyone using one in the wild, but I know they're out there somewhere, and they're practically indestructible. Also, if the price of copper is an obstacle it's also possible to make them with steel electrical conduit, which is just as functional but not as pretty in my opinion.
