@Hyperlynx I don't have advice as to who to go to because I never managed that either.
But I do have similar issues (sleep without pain but with discomfort) and recently discovered several things:
- polyester or non-biodegradable things as a direct contact thing is a definite no (probably mild sensitivity)
- I probably have a mild dust allergy so definitely need to clean everything in the bedroom more than usual
- I need a den to sleep in, a den of cushions and things to feel surrounded by that also doesn't close me in (just comfy feeling, no claustrophobia feeling)
A mattress on the floor next to the couch with lots of cushions was easier to sleep in than the bed. I've gotten myself to "actually fall asleep within about half an hour of attempting to try to sleep" in the bed by spouse adding loads of cushions and big stuffed animals in a wall around me. I suspect the next thing will have to be "a firmer mattress so I can't feel the bed's shape, with soft topper so I don't feel hardness".
If you have the opportunity, sleeping in different areas and figuring out why it's harder or easier in those areas definitely adds some usable clues to the mystery. And if you suspect something (like dust or polyester or particular fabric or whatever), act on it just to try it out and see if it helps.
